Minus Forty has always worked to be as environmentally sustainable as possible through every aspect of production.
This starts with the power we use in our office and manufacturing plant. More than 20% of the energy used to craft the cooling and freezing products at our factory comes from solar panels mounted on the roof, and we plan to move beyond 30% by the year 2020.
Since much of the power from the grid is not as clean as solar, producing power like this is a tremendous environmental boon.
Our area of the country averages around 300 sunny days per year, so we’re ideally placed to make the most of our solar array.
No HFCs during foaming
The foaming process is vital to properly insulating a cooling unit.
Without the foam air bubbles in some parts of your cooler, it will not be anywhere near as energy efficient as it can be. However, the industry standard is to use hydro-fluorocarbons or HFCs.
If those sound similar to the CFCs once used in hair spray and contributed to the degradation of the ozone layer, it’s because they’re part of the same family.
HFCs are even dangerous to breathe in, which leads to more resource-intensive safety protocols to protect our workers.
Minus Forty is devoted to not destroying any part of the environment, and has thus replaced HFCs with other foaming methods.
Environmentally friendly refrigerant
R290 refrigerant is the best environmental choice we can make right now. As a type of propane, it is not absolutely clean-burning. However, it is a far superior method to the traditional refrigerants such as Freon.
